Good News! Isaiah 61-62

¹The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me,
         Because the LORD has anointed me
         To bring good news to the afflicted;
         He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
         To proclaim liberty to captives
         And freedom to prisoners;
    ²To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD

Luke recorded an incident that took place in a synagogue in Nazareth when Jesus got up and read these words (above) from the book of Isaiah (Luke 4:18-21). After He closed the book and sat down, He said, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." As I understand it, these words pointed to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus as the favorable year of the Lord. However, as we continue to read further in Isaiah 61, after the favorable year of the Lord comes a day of vengeance of our God.

This coming day of vengeance (see below) of our God provides an opportunity for God's people to comfort, encourage and point people to God so that He will be glorified. It is a time for sharing the greatness of our God and the good news of Jesus so that many more people can experience comfort instead of mourning, a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning and the mantle of praise instead of the spirit of fainting. This is a time for God to rescue the weak and to transform them into oaks of righteousness as He works through our lives.

         And the day of vengeance of our God;
         To comfort all who mourn,
    ³To grant those who mourn in Zion,
         Giving them a garland instead of ashes,
         The oil of gladness instead of mourning,
         The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting
         So they will be called oaks of righteousness,
         The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.
    ⁴Then they will rebuild the ancient ruins,
         They will raise up the former devastations;
         And they will repair the ruined cities,
         The desolations of many generations.

We praise You God that you gave us Jesus and proclaimed the favorable year of the Lord through Him giving us the ability to exchange our corrupt lives for His perfect life. Now we are called to a mission to reach others with the message of comfort, gladness, praise and strength as we await the day of vengeance of our God. We thank You for that day as it will usher in a new heavens and a new earth and a life without sin and corruption. Cause us to participate well with You in these days as we surrender our lives to You each day.
