Only God Judges Righteously [Job 22]

⁴"Is it because of your reverence that He reproves you,
         That He enters into judgment against you?
    ⁵"Is not your wickedness great,
         And your iniquities without end?
    ⁶"For you have taken pledges of your brothers without cause,
         And stripped men naked.
    ⁷"To the weary you have given no water to drink,
         And from the hungry you have withheld bread.
    ⁸"But the earth belongs to the mighty man,
         And the honorable man dwells in it.
    ⁹"You have sent widows away empty,
         And the strength of the orphans has been crushed.
    ¹⁰"Therefore snares surround you,
         And sudden dread terrifies you,
    ¹¹Or darkness, so that you cannot see,
         And an abundance of water covers you.

Because Eliphaz was so convinced that suffering on earth was God's reproof and punishment for wicked behavior that he made up accusations against Job to justify Job's suffering even though he had no basis for the accusations. According to Eliphaz's belief about God, Job had to be guilty. I am wondering today how much this sort of thinking permeates my mind. What assumptions am I making about people who are suffering? What am I believing about God that isn't true? Job's story has enabled me to see the strong connection between how I think about and treat people with what I believe about God.

We praise You, God, that You alone are the Righteous Judge. Cause us to examine our thoughts and behaviors concerning others that can show us areas of unbelief about You in how we judge others. You, alone, are the One who Judges rightly. Believe the truth in us.
